Punjab Congress Rift Erupts Into Open Leadership Battle as Charanjit Singh Channi Camp Challenges Raja Warring

The Punjab Congress has entered an open phase of internal conflict as supporters of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi publicly challenge Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. Senior leaders, former ministers, legislators, and party workers have demanded a review of the state leadership, intensifying the battle ahead of the Assembly elections.

Chandigarh: The Punjab Congress has witnessed its most visible display of internal factionalism, with supporters of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi launching an open campaign against Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. The political development unfolded after a large gathering of senior Congress leaders, former ministers, sitting Members of the Legislative Assembly, and former legislators assembled at Channi's residence, urging the party high command to review its decision on the state leadership.

The meeting marked the clearest indication yet of an escalating internal power struggle within the Punjab Congress, with the Channi camp pressing for a change in the party's state leadership ahead of the next Assembly elections. The gathering has transformed simmering internal differences into a public leadership contest, sending a strong political message to the Congress high command.

Addressing the developments, Charanjit Singh Channi said that Congress leaders had called on him at his residence and urged him to present the sentiments and aspirations of the people of Punjab before the party high command. He stated that he had been requested to communicate the concerns of party workers and leaders regarding the current organisational structure.

Former Member of the Legislative Assembly Davinder Ghubaya claimed that party workers wanted to see Charanjit Singh Channi either as the Congress party's chief ministerial candidate or as the President of the Punjab Congress.

Former Member of the Legislative Assembly Darshan Brar stated that the Congress would face significant challenges in forming the next government if it continued under Raja Warring's leadership.

Senior Congress leader and former minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa adopted a measured position, stating that the leaders were not expressing anger against the Congress high command but were seeking an opportunity to place the sentiments of party workers before it. He said the delegation had requested Charanjit Singh Channi to seek an appointment with the party leadership so they could explain why organisational decisions should reflect public sentiment if the Congress intended to return to power in Punjab.

The leaders present at Channi's residence included former ministers Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Sukhjinder Singh Sarkaria, Rana Gurjit Singh, and Gurpreet Singh Kangar; former Deputy Chief Minister Om Parkash Soni; former Member of Parliament Mohammad Sadiq; former Members of the Legislative Assembly Darshan Brar, Lakhbir Singh Lakha, Ramanjeet Singh Sikki, Harminder Singh Gill, Inderbir Singh Bolaria, Davinder Ghubaya, Nazar Singh Manshahia, Kikki Dhillon, Parminder Singh Pinky, Angad Singh Saini, and Dalvir Singh Goldy; Congress leaders Barinder Singh Dhillon, Harry Mann, Primal Singh, Madam Lal Jalalpur, Sukhpal Bhullar, Narinder Singh Bajwa, and Tarsem DC; Congress Members of the Legislative Assembly Joginder Pal Bhoa, Laddi Sherowalia, and Kuljit Singh Kala Dhillon; National Students' Union of India leader Isherpreet Singh; Balkaur Singh, father of late Congress leader and singer Sidhu Moosewala; and Rahulinder Singh Sidhu, son of former Punjab Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal.

The gathering is widely being viewed as a significant political message to the Congress high command. Although the Channi camp has maintained that it remains loyal to the party leadership, it has made its position clear by demanding a review of the decision to continue Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as Punjab Congress President. The unprecedented public show of support for Charanjit Singh Channi has turned internal dissatisfaction into an open leadership battle, setting the stage for a crucial political contest within the Punjab Congress ahead of the next Assembly elections.
